This book is written for people who would like to learn to understand photography or art as well as for those who are already competent at it.

Stuart Oring

  • Stuart Oring is a photographer, educator, and author with a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA in Communication from American University. He studied under renowned photographers Minor White, Charlie Arnold, and Ralph Hattersley.

  • With over 25 years as a visual information specialist in the Federal Government and more than 20 years teaching photography, Stuart’s work has appeared in Popular Photography, Scientific American, The New York Times, and more. His clients include IBM, Pfizer, and Eastman Kodak.

  • He is the author of Understanding Pictures and several e-books exploring photography, aesthetics, and visual analysis. A Lifetime Achievement Award honoree from Marquis Who’s Who (2021), Stuart continues to explore how creativity, synchronicity, and subconscious systems inform visual understanding.
